This wonderful island is also home to the 3,717 metre high Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain, located in the heart of Parque Nacional del Teide in the centre of the island. Attracting four million visitors a year, the park is a definite 'must-see' destination. Visitors can take the highway through the centre of the park, or can wander off the beaten track to explore the stunning landscape.
Parc Nacional de Teide is home to 14 different plants found nowhere else on earth. There are currently 21 walking tracks marking the way through volcanic terrain, beside unique rock formations. Mount Teide is located at the north of the park and for the energetic, it is possible to take a four hour hike to the peak, however for an easy ride, one can take advantage of the cable car available.
There are many popular tourist resorts found on the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital city is in the north-east of the island, a busy port and a hugely popular resort. Here, you can enjoy strolling through the centre, admiring beautifully coloured buildings. Pay a visit to the city park which boasts picturesque fountains, greenery and a tropical oasis of birdsong.
For the shopaholics, Santa Cruz is certainly the best shopping location on the island, there are several multi-story shopping centres and many quirky and sophisticated shops.
Puerto de la Cruz
The second largest resort, bearing a history of tourism, dating back to the late 19th Century when it was a spa destination frequented by upper class, Victorian ladies. The spa 'El Puerto' was a place of tranquility and relaxation, today however, it is the Hotel Casino Tauro.
In contrast to the resorts in the south, Puerto de la Cruz is traditional attracting many a classy tourist, offering attractive boardwalks, lush gardens, traditional restaurants and a central plaza the Plaza del Charco, with plenty of lively terrace bars.
The accommodation offered in Puerto de la Cruz is also different from most of the other places in the islands since hotels predominate over apartments.
The city is home to many buildings of great historical and artistic value such as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña, la Ermita de San Telmo, el castillo de San Felipe, la casa de la Aduana and the old quay. For the nature lover, there are the Loro Park botanical gardens founded in 1788 where you can see a number of trees and plants from all over the world thanks to Tenerife's fantastic climate. One can also see the largest collection of parrots in the world, and an excellent dolphinarium. Puerto de la Cruz has also several small beaches of volcanic sand, Playa Jardin and Martianez, and just 45 minutes away from the city by foot, you can get to the beautiful blue flag beach, El Bullullo (La Orotava) walking through the banana plantations and up and down the cliffs.
Playa de las Americas
The ideal location for the young and adventurous holiday maker is Playa de las Americas. A man-made beach resort built for sun-worshippers and party people. Playa de las Americas has the highest success rate for all-year round tourism, attracting masses from all over the world throughout the whole year. It is renowned for it's beaches and vibrant nightlife. For those looking for an easy holiday where you do not need to speak much Spanish, this is the perfect location. Playa de las Americas is situated on the coast next to another popular resort, Los Christianos, 16 miles from the Tenerife South Airport -Reina Sofia.
Tenerife Weather and Climate
The weather in Tenerife changes depending on location.The warmest parts being the south and west parts of the island however around Mount Teide, cold winds and snow are not uncommon.
